What is Modulation?

Modulation is a mechanism governed by a collective agreement that allows adjusting employees’ working time based on company activity, over a defined reference period (from 4 weeks to 3 years).

  • The employee may work more or less than their usual weekly working hours (e.g. 35h) depending on business needs

  • The goal is to reach, at the end of the period, a forecasted total number of hours (e.g. 1607h for full-time)

At the end of the period, compare the actual hours worked with the contractual hours:

  • If the total exceeds, the excess hours are paid as overtime

  • If the total matches, no adjustment is necessary

How to Create a Modulation Period

From Settings > Establishments & Schedules > Your establishment > Modulation tab:

  • Click Create a period

  • Choose the calculation mode Modulation

  • Define the dates of the reference period (between 4 weeks and 3 years)

  • Enter the total number of hours to be completed:

    • By default: 1607h for full-time at 35h/week

How do we calculate the 1607 hours?

  • 365 days − 137 non-working days (weekly rest, vacation, public holidays) = 228 working days

  • 228 × 7h = 1596h, rounded to 1600h

  • 7h for the solidarity day = 1607h

  • The total adjusts automatically according to the weekly duration stated in the contract

  • If the period is not aligned with the calendar year, the calculation is done pro rata

  • Define the upper and lower thresholds in hours or in %

  • Select the teams concerned

  • Click Create to validate

💡

  • You can customize modulation per collaborator: exclude some employees, indicate an initial balance, customize the total hours to be achieved over the period or modify the dates taken into account.

  • If you apply modulation only to one team, you will not be able to activate another smoothing period or another modulation period for other teams in the same establishment.
